Its installation position and configuration directly determine whether it will function correctly during an overpressure event. Install Safety Valves in the Vapor Phase

When a vessel contains both vapor and liquid phases, the safety valve must be installed in the vapor space. Safety valves are designed based on gas and steam relief characteristics. Installation in the liquid phase can cause liquid hammer, severely reduced discharge capacity, and complete valve failure. Vapor phase installation ensures rapid response to pressure changes and reliable relief performance.

Connect Flammable Liquid Discharges to Emergency Tanks

Safety valves relieving flammable liquids must never discharge directly to atmosphere. The outlet must connect to an emergency dump tank. When the relieved medium is high-temperature flammable material, the receiving vessel requires appropriate protective measures such as cooling coils, firewalls, or flame arresters. This requirement is mandatory in petrochemical and other hazardous facilities to prevent secondary fires and explosions.

Follow Strict Vent Stack Specifications

For non-toxic, non-flammable media, safety valves may vent locally to atmosphere, but must meet these safety distance requirements:

The vent outlet must be elevated at least 1 meter above operator access levels to prevent personnel injury. The vent must not face ignition sources, spark-emitting areas, or high-temperature equipment within 15 meters, avoiding flammable gas accumulation or explosion risks.

For indoor equipment or vessels, the safety valve vent must extend through the roof and project at least 2 meters above the roofline. This ensures rapid dispersion of any released gases and prevents accumulation in explosive concentrations.

Keep Inlet Isolation Valves Open and Sealed

If an isolation valve is installed at the safety valve inlet for maintenance purposes, this valve must remain in the fully open position during normal operation. The valve position must be secured with a lead seal or locking device to prevent inadvertent closure. This critical measure ensures the safety valve remains ready for service at all times, preventing human error from disabling overpressure protection.
