Where you find them

Boilers are the classic example. A steam boiler running at 10 bar needs a safety valve set slightly above that. If the burner stays on too long or a control fails, the valve lifts, vents steam, and prevents a rupture. Same for pressure vessels, air receivers, chemical reactors, and storage tanks. Even your home compressor has one.

Different media, different needs

For steam and gas, you want a full-lift valve that opens wide and fast. For liquid, a conventional lift valve works fine because liquids don’t expand as violently. For toxic or flammable fluids, the valve must be closed‑bonnet type – everything goes through a pipe to a safe flare or tank, not into the room.

Not a relief valve

People confuse safety valves with relief valves. A safety valve pops open suddenly (snap action). A relief valve opens gradually as pressure rises. Safety valves are for compressible fluids like steam, air, and gas. Relief valves are for liquids. Some devices combine both – but that’s another story.

One more role: backup protection

In critical processes, you’ll find two safety valves on the same vessel. One works, the other stands by. While one is pulled for testing or repair, the other stays online. Their inlet isolation valves are mechanically interlocked – you can’t close both at once. That’s how plants keep running without losing protection.

Bottom line: a safety valve is cheap insurance. You hope it never opens. But when it does, it needs to work perfectly – because the alternative is much worse.
